About the Program

The School of International Studies at Peking University (hereinafter referred to as SIS) is inviting applications for a two-year Master Program in International Relations (MIR). Students will receive intensive and rigorous trainings in various fields ranging from general politics, foreign affairs, to social development of contemporary China. Students are encouraged to study Mandarin in this program, but all MIR courses and theses are conducted in English. Students will be granted a master’s degree in International Relations by Peking University once all requirements are fulfilled.

Qualifications

1. Eligibility. This program is designed only for international applicants. Foreign applicants should hold valid passports issued by their countries. Residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before November 30, 2013, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

.2. Prior Degree. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution of recognized standing. Applicant who has not yet graduated upon application, must get the degree before September 2020.

3. Language Proficiency. Applicants from non-English speaking background or who did not receive their bachelor’s degree from an English speaking institution are required to provide valid English test certificates - IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 107(ibt).

Required Application Materials

1. Peking University application form with a photograph attached. Applicants from overseas please visit http://www.studyatpku.com to complete the application form.
2. A personal statement of no more than 1500 words.
3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma, must be original or certified copies either in Chinese or English (Students in the last year of their bachelor’s program should provide an official letter stating their expected graduation date).
4. Official transcripts, original or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
5. Two reference letters, the format of the reference letters can be downloaded:

The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of the applicant’s recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English.

Note: Original copy of reference letter sent from referees to chenfang2015@pku.edu.cn is acceptable.

6. English language proficiency certificate, IELTS 7.0, or TOEFL 107 (ibt). TOEFL or IELTS should be taken after Sep. 1st , 2018.
7. If applicable: abstracts of publications and/or any original work in other forms in relevant fields.
8. One passport size photo.

*The application materials will not be returned.

Submission

Applicants should send by post or hand in person the required documents to International Programs Officer Ms. CHEN Fang via the contact information below. Soft copy of the application documents must be sent in one PDF file in sequence to chenfang2015@pku.edu.cn.

Application fee

400RMB, nonrefundable, paid through online payment or in cash by Yinlian bank card.

*Please note that incomplete application materials or application without application fee will not be processed.

Timetable

Application close : April 15,2020 (All application documents must be submitted before this date)

Application open: November 1,2019

Pre-admission decisions announced: before late April, 2020

Interviews (When necessary): around late April, 2020 (Finalists will be interviewed via Skype, telephone or, in rare cases, in person)

Final admission results announced: late April or early May, 2020 (via email)

Official Admission letter and visa application form sent out: early July, 2020 (by EMS)

Program starts: early September 2020 (the exact date will be announced in the admission confirmation letter)

Scholarship

1, Chinese Government Scholarship

1. The MIR program will nominate two or three candidates for the merit-based China’s Government Scholarship (CGS), which will provide the awardees with a monthly living stipend and assistance with accommodation arrangement. MIR tuition fee will also be partly covered by the CGS (students are expected to make up for the difference by other means). Applicants who intend to apply CGS through this way must submit CGS-MIR Program application form (please check it here) together with other application materials at the timing of application.
2. Students can also apply to Chinese Government Scholarship through the Chinese Embassy of the student’s country of origin. Information is provided by the Chinese Embassy and Chinese Scholarship Council (http://www.csc.edu.cn).

2, Beijing Government Scholarship

MIR Program provides this scholarship admission for 1-2 applicant(s), the successful applicants will be granted 10,000-50,000RMB. Please check this scholarship application form from here.

Degree

Certified by the Degree Committee of Peking University, a Master’s Degree in law, majored in International Relations will be granted upon completion of required credits and successful defense of a Master’s thesis.

Course offering of MIR Program for 2019-2021 for the reference:

• 必修课19学分：Compulsory Courses for 19 credits

Chinese courses are compulsory for 4 credits. Courses No.1-5 requires for 15 credits.

• 汉语课免修的员工，需多选修一门汉语授课的专业课，该专业课程可抵必修学分

Students who are exempt from Chinese language course need to take one more elective course in Chinese, which can be credited as a compulsory course.

• 选修课12学分：Elective Courses for 12 credits

中文选修课Elective Courses in Chinese

备注：所有课程将会根据实际情况进行必要调整

毕业论文：

员工在修满上述学分后，于第二学年结束前，应在导师的指导下完成学位论文并附中文摘要。论文不计学分。

Thesis

In addition to receiving the required course credits, students should complete a research thesis under the guidance of an academic supervisor before the end of the second academic year. The thesis will not count for any academic credits.
